Your Interior Design questions answered!

Thank you for sending me your design questions:

Here below i have answered them -

  • I have a small toilet downstairs and i want to convert it into a wetroom and toilet - what are the most important things i have to consider?

Answer from Design Scheme -

Sloping the floor towards the drain for efficient water drainage. Choosing a high-quality drain system and ensuring proper ventilation to prevent mould growth. Selecting non-slip flooring materials and ensuring thorough waterproofing. Choosing tiles that are easy to clean and waterproof materials for walls. Incorporating storage solutions that can resist moisture and planning adequate lighting.

  • My office room is based towards the north of the house, i dont get proper light coming in - What can i do to ensure that i have adequate lighting in the room?

Answer from Design Scheme -

To maximize natural light in a room, place mirrors strategically to reflect light, choose light-colored walls, invest in good-quality artificial lighting, incorporate task lighting, and opt for light-colored furniture. Use sheer curtains or blinds and choose furniture with reflective surfaces.

Choose light-colored flooring materials. Arrange furniture to avoid blocking light, using bright and energy-efficient lighting fixtures, and replacing traditional bulletin boards with whiteboards or light-colored corkboards that reflect light. For an extra pop of natural light, think about adding skylights or light tubes to your space if it's feasible. Consider the layout of furniture to ensure that work areas receive the most light. Arrange desks and workstations to take advantage of available natural and artificial light sources.

  • How do i plan a small kitchen layout?

Answer from Design Scheme -

When planning a kitchen renovation, measure the dimensions of the space and take note of electrical outlets, plumbing, and other fixtures. Consider factors such as cooking habits, storage needs, and the number of people using the space, and divide the kitchen into zones based on functionality to optimize workflow and organization.

In a small kitchen, choose compact appliances and use vertical space for storage. A galley or one-wall layout can be efficient, and a rolling cart or fold-down table can serve as additional workspace. Consider a compact dining table or built-in seating like a breakfast nook, and folding or wall-mounted tables for small kitchens.

To make the kitchen feel brighter and more spacious, use proper lighting like under-cabinet, pendant, and recessed lighting. Light colors for cabinets, countertops, and walls create an illusion of space and invest in smart storage solutions like pull-out pantry shelves, rotating corner cabinets, and organizers for pots and pans. Use furniture that serves multiple purposes and reflective materials like glass or glossy finishes to create a sense of openness.

  • I have lots of traditional wooden furniture, what kind of colour scheme should i opt for a room which gets a lot of natural sunlight?

Answer from Design Scheme -

When decorating a room with wooden furniture, opt for neutral tones such as whites, creams, beiges, and light grays. Soft pastel shades like light blues, greens, and lavender can also be used to add a touch of color. Alternatively, earthy colors like soft browns, muted greens, and warm terracottas complement the natural feel of the wood and create a cozy atmosphere.

Pale blues and soft greens can create a calming vibe and enhance the airy feel in a sunlit space. Soft, muted yellows can add a subtle pop of color and create a cheerful ambiance, pairing well with the warmth of wooden furniture and sunlight.

For a modern look with wooden furniture, consider cool gray tones as they complement the warmth of wood while providing a neutral backdrop. Use whites with warm undertones to maintain a clean and airy feel. Incorporating darker accents like navy, charcoal, or chocolate brown creates contrast and adds depth to the room.

To add sophistication to wooden furniture, incorporate metallic accents such as gold, brass, or copper. Stick to variations of a single color, such as different shades of blue or green, for a harmonious look.
